Where are we now?

The reality

BLOCKED; YouTube, Flickr, Tumblr, FourDocs, Documentary heaven
Resources; one camera per 4 students
DEMOGRAPHICS; classes of 26 with TG of A* - G, up to 40% with SLD/SEN needs
DIGITAL LITERACY; some have their own webpages, others cannot even upload from a camera/use a phone/ use the internet

" Miss what is the url bar / search engine/ how do it print/save/search?"

"Miss - I don't have a mobile phone/computer/access to the internet ; i cannot do my homework"
" using a blog to work on is awesome Miss; I can work on it from home and at school without a book to lose"

outcomes; what has changed?
  • "I love this lesson, it is my best subject" (I ask why) " because i am most successful here - it uses things i am good at to help me learn things i am not good at"
  • " I am using prezi/blogger in all my lessons to present my work"
  • " 50% of group currently choosing to use digital interfaces/instruments for the current project"
  • "CPG 80% at or beating TG"

lessons learned what next

  • PLANNING IS KEY - do it yourself then presume the weakest digital learners will take four times as long and the strongest will have done it before you finish explaining. Create one blog for one programme of study then get a student to proof read it before using it with a whole group
  • success needs a partnered learning approach.
  • accept that many will need real specific direction/varied scaffolding
  • the digital native concept is class/gender/culture biased - as is the digital immigrant
  • digital literacy needs to be on the school curriculum - NOT just in media/ICT
  • some learners are scared to use digital technologies
  • run skill based short/sharp practical workshops
  • teach the LSAs
  • use digital technology where it is relevant and useful
i use
  1. blogger
  2. prezi.com
  3. slideshare
  4. surveymonkey
  5. polleverywhere
  6. vimeo
  7. youtube
  8. jux.com
  9. wix.com & weebly.org
as starters

  • ACTION creating a web site that is less linear and easier for differentiated access
  • ACTION  improving the partnered learning culture
  • DONE two new rooms
  • ONGOING continue to develop student mentoring for skills/ techniques and theory
